Donald Trump’s latest strategy to ramp up pressure on Iran has been dealt an embarrassing blow after several ships defied his blockade in the Strait of Hormuz.

Multiple Iran-linked tankers—including sanctioned ships and a Chinese-linked tanker—transited the vital waterway within hours of the U.S. Navy’s blockade taking effect.

The news raised immediate questions about the effectiveness of Trump’s plan, which was announced on Sunday after the collapse of U.S.-Iran talks in Islamabad.

U.S. Central Command insisted on Tuesday that no ships had bypassed the blockade, despite independently verified shipping tracking data showing vessels had passed through the Strait.

Maybe the “Finest Navy in the world” just didn’t see them?

Well a blockade doesn’t mean anything if they arnt willing to enforce it with violence.

That’s the fundamental truth of all of this. I doubt anyone thinks the us Navy is going to willingly fire on a civilian ship carrying oil we like it too much to waste it. Not to mention the international fall out and the actual war it would cause considering who owns those ships. So what does the blockade even matter? It might as well not even be there.

While our government is corrupt and insane, the men and women actually on the ground typically are a bit more sane.

Sure, it’s good it isn’t enforced, but it shows how stupid he is. You don’t make a threat that you aren’t willing to follow through on. If you do, and they call your bluff, they aren’t going to take the next threat seriously either.

This is why the TACO thing is so important. None of his threats are credible anymore, so they don’t have any power. Trump thinks he’s strong, because he makes threats. Previous administration made far fewer, but they were credible, so they actually had power. Trump is like a child in that he thinks he can just make threats and get his way all the time. It’d be really sad if it weren’t so damaging.

This was such a stupid strategy, in the 1st place. What were they going to do in order to enforce this? Open fire on everyone shipping oil? The US would literally be enforcing Iran’s blockade on the Strait, for them.

Based on the last 6 months I figured they’d board and steal the tankers to sell on trumps personal name.

I think (but not positive) it was so that the US could decide who to let through after Iran did. So if Iran got paid off by let’s say, China, the US would block that.

Well, the idea was that the ones paying the toll are the only ones getting through, so, being far more generous than they deserve, the strategy is to make paying the tolls not worth it. Still, like you said, there was no way to enforce this reasonably. It was a weak threat that anyone could see wasn’t going to be enforced.

I don’t think it’s much of a blockade if you can just “defy” it. Did the Navy ships tell them they were breaking the rules? “Heeeeeey, you guys. You’re not allowed to do that! Come back! Stop it! We’re gonna get in trouble!”

Because even these idiots know that firing on China’s tankers would end up devastating the US and potentially kicking off WW3.

That would personally put them in a position of showing their true cowardice, lack of a plan, severely harm their wealth, and potentially their lives.

That’s all they care about in the end, their money and their skins.

especially given that US allies no longer give a fuck about Trump’s wars.

it’ll be US Vs [Iran + China]. and the US military has proven that it can only fight against faraway civilians. but when it comes to actual war they lost against a handful of Afghan goat herders.

I’m skeptical that China would retaliate. They laid an entire U.S. electricity grid of renewables last year. I feel like they would just let oil prices go to the moon, double down on renewable energy and watch as every other world power comes to them begging for solar panels and cheap electric vehicles.

I’m absolutely not surprised that Trump’s bluff was called. There’s not much chance that the US Navy is going to open fire on non-Iranian vessels. That would be tantamount to declaring war on whatever nation the vessel was registered in.
