Technology@lemmy.world•Japan finds a way to recover 90% of lithium from old EV batteriesEnglish
18·2 days agoThey are listed in order of importance… reduce first, if you can’t, then reuse. If you can’t reuse, then recycle.
Problem is, we saw “recycle” and thougt “infinite resources” and ditched the other two… turns out that most things cant really be recycled, so now it’s just landfill all the way

9·2 days agoAlso grid storage doesn’t have the sort of deep, rapid discharge/charge cycles that EVs go through. Once an EV battery is no good in the car, it still has about 80% of it’s useable capacity left. Meaning, there will always be a need for “new” EV batteries, but grid storage would saturate and leave surplus batteries. Not to mention, as the grid storage batteries fall out of their useful life for that purpose, they can be recycled into new EV batteries and begin the cycle anew.

politics @lemmy.world•Virginia joins a national effort to ensure only popular vote winners become presidentEnglish
7·2 days agoIf they enact it early it would be effectively dead in the water because it would still leave the decision up to swing states, and people would lose confidence in the movement. Holding off until it’s a sure thing gives it a whole lot more power.
Either way, it’s still a couple more years until the next general election cycle spins up, they may have it locked in by then.

10·2 days agoit’s in the last sentence of the summary. 270 essentially guarantees that the winner of the popular vote becomes POTUS, as long as all states in the compact abide by the agreement. Once that happens, the EC is basically defunct.

0·7 days agoI feel like that makes a little bit of sense… if you don’t want to be employed, should you be counted in an unemployment statistic? It effectively turns the statistic into a representation of people looking for, but unable to find, employment.
For example, if there is a household where one person is the bread-winner and the other is a stay at home parent, should the stay at home parent be counted as unemployed if they’re not planning on being employed?
Another example is a day-labourer who works for cash. Even if they are reporting and paying taxes, they’re not really “employed” in the classic sense, but definitely not “unemployed” if they are working every day.

If you had that chance, are you saying you wouldn’t?
