US Vice-President JD Vance has insisted he was right to stage a two-day campaign visit to back Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán five days before he was voted out of office by opposition party Tisza’s landslide victory.

Insisting Orbán was a “great guy” who did a “very good job”, Vance told Fox News he was “one of the few European leaders we’ve seen who’s been willing to stand up to the bureaucracy in Brussels”.

While he was sad Orbán had lost, he was sure the US would “work very well” with the new government, he said.

Kind of but also not really. Orban was against taking a massive EU loan to buy American weapons to give to Ukraine. And Orban was for re opening cheap Russian gas.

Both moves benefit the EU more than the US which actively worked against these things. But Orban was playing so many sides at one that basically everyone except the Europeans rooted for him.

With Orban gone the EU might very well destroy itself in a debt trap against Russia. But who knows.

If you think loaning billions in US weapons with Eurobonds is a sound investment I’ve got a few bridges to sell you.

The prime purpose for those loans is spending on European defense products. That is also part of the loan criteria.
