Liberal voters joined the chorus of their representatives appealing to the right-wing constituents and still lost.
Yes, but not voting isn’t going to make it go away either.
You think we voted ourselves into fascism?
We can’t even get them to condemn Israel
The cool thing about voting is that it’s not mutually exclusive with any other action.
You can assassinate a Nazi, cast a vote, join a protest, and burn a Tesla dealership down all in one day.
So… vote. It’s easy and super low risk. Do whatever else you think will make an impact too - but in addition to voting, not in lieu of. And I don’t just mean the big elections - voting a Nazi off of your local school board or w/e is going to make a bigger impact to your community than any dipshit in DC.
It may not fix the country by itself, but it’s a tool in the box that we need to use every resource from that we can.
Exactly. A lot of people thought Orban cannot be defeated in elections after ruling Hungary for 16 years straight, yet he just conceded. He had everything on his side: billions spent on state propaganda, intelligence services spying on opposition, Russian misinformation campaigns, gerrymandered districts, etc. But when 4 out of 5 people cast their votes, with a large part of them being against you, he probably thought he would rather give up peacefully than face the wrath of the nation.
Democracy works if we make it work. Voting is a big part ot it, but as you say, a lot of other things can be done in parallel.
Replacing 1 fascist for another is not progress.
Looking at my nation.
- Leftists get tricked again into not voting
- Government moves right
- Repeat
If the leftist vote is really that important, maybe politicians should try appealing to it sometime 🤷♀️
100
I’ve heard out of the same mouth hole of people that the leftist is a huge voting bloc but ultimately worthless to the Democrat party.
But the rich donors would be really upset by that and we can’t be upsetting them /s.
There wasn’t anyone for a leftist to vote for so they weren’t tricked into staying home. When the options are a shit stew or a turd sandwich people are going to choose neither. Its weird to expect a leftist to eat shit for the benefit of a right wing party.
The government moves right under the democrats just like it does under a republican. For example Obama was in the center and further left than genocidal Joe/Kamala who were firmly on the right.
The reason this happens is because too many people think if they just vote for the lesser evil things will finally get better, despite the fact its been happening for decades and things have only gotten worse. Lesser evils only lead people towards a greater evil.
Obama was right of flipping Nixon!
There wasn’t anyone for a leftist to vote for
That’s what primaries are for.
And if you can’t get enough leftists out to vote in the primary… then are you really a meaningful political bloc, or just a bunch of loud people on the internet that are vastly outnumbered by the people in the country who are actually engaged?
Still, it’s nice to have lesser evils to have a little more time to prepare. We really aren’t in any state to win a civil war. And if we need to fight a civil war anyway, it’s good propaganda to say we tried everything less extreme.
It seems to have worked for Hungary?
It absolutely did. We sent fascist Orban packing after his 16 yrs long rule in Hungary. 79.5% voter turnout. I bet if the US had similar levels of participation, the orange clown would not be the current president.
And in his place we would just have another imperialist capitalist warmonger instead. Maybe not as bad, but frankly there has literally never been a single good US president, and it’s asinine to think that Trump is an anomaly and not just a symptom of the larger problem.
You can’t vote out fascism.
The new guy is already inviting Netanyahu over lmfao he’s not much better
He’s proEU though!
Swapping out Hitler for Goebbels is what they did. They changed the face, but not the politics
You do not vote fascism away. Even though this feels obvious, the right-wing political establishment in the U.S. has accomplished something remarkable with the help of the Democratic Party. They managed to shift the discourse so far right that they normalized positions that were possibly once inconceivable for many liberal voters.
Democrat politicians have long tried to appeal to increasingly fascistic rhetoric by boasting about compromises and their conservative shifts on issues like immigration and foreign policy. Yet, Democrats are not in opposition in this regard, so they made this continual movement right some sort of deluded progress. This isn’t a theory; we have one giant right wing in the U.S. with different components. The party switches of the past that took place because of conflicts over slavery and the civil rights movement may pale in comparison to this event. Unpacking what just happened, what happened in that not-so-distant past, and what seems inevitable now will help us face a new, unsettling reality.
