Mix of different physically demanding jobs while I was building up money to pay for college. Farmwork, construction etc during the day. Unloading package trucks for UPS was probably the most energy intensive in the evening. Hand unloading 2,100 packages per hour an emptying 3-4 trailers in 4-5 hours was one hell of an aerobic workout. On a normal day I was burning 4-4500K calories in the spring and fall from the high level of activity working 12-14 hours per day. I had strongly defined abs and built a lot of muscle mass.

Winter however was something else. It was a very cold, -10F to 10 for most of the winter. It takes a lot of food to just keep warm when you are in those temps all day. I was outside enough I had to keep my house cooler (50-55F) as my metabolism shifted into high gear.

Eating 4,500-5,000 calories is pretty easy. Larger portions at meals plus a few calorie dense snacks easily gets you there.

That extra 2000-3000 calories is hard. Half a package of oreos or a dozen donuts when I woke up starving at 2am was what I resorted too. Lots of carbs and fat.

When I worked a physical job outside in cold weather (sub-freezing temps) it was closer to 7-8,000 calories per day and I would still lose 5-10 lbs in 3 months.

I put it back on in the spring.

Then lost it again in the summer as the heat suppressed my appetite.

Then gained it back in the fall as the temperatures were more pleasant.

    And repeat…

Been there, done that, three times.

    It’s not fun.

The last time I used my severance plus a special program in unemployment to start my own business. It’s amazing how much more money you can make when you keep 100% of the revenue from your efforts.

A landlord is almost always making money even if they are just “breaking even” on the mortgage.

If the landlord is still paying for a mortgage, the profit goes into their equity gain.

Once the mortgage is paid off, the profit goes into the landlords pocket.

This is how many people get started being parasites on society. They have other people pay the bank while they gain the assets of their labor.

  • Until you get too many middle managers vying to climb the corporate ladder. Then it’s all meetings about the meeting in six months, that you’ll need 3x daily meetings to prepare for. After the big meeting you have to do follow-up meetings for the next 6 months until they come up with an idea for another big meeting. All while creating and sending reports about the meetings to other managers and the c-suite. Which then triggers yet more meetings.

Oh and you must have weekly meetings with your subordinates to update them on results of the other meetings. Those meetings can’t be at the same time as the safety meetings (you are doing those weekly right) or the corporate wide meetings that are called at least monthly.

  • As a schoolteacher my wife has perfected the look. It works on kids, other teachers, admin, bus drivers, and even gang affiliated parents. Apparently it’s terrifying to most people.

The only person it doesn’t work on is me.

What’s fun is when she occasionally attempts to narrate it.

Her “I am glaring at you!”

Me “Oh I see your “come hither” looks, they are quite sexy.”

    Her “You are impossible!”

Me “Darl’n control yourself, we are in public.”

  • It’s a good idea but it’s missing the mark.

The taxes need to be on the CEO compensation not the company. The executive teams with huge paychecks really don’t give a fuck about the company. Look at all the CEO’s who accept huge payouts when the company is going bankrupt and they are laying off employees.

It also needs to be based on total compensation, not just the paycheck for everyone. Otherwise companies will start to offer higher pay, but drop benefits like the greedy little fucks they are.

It also needs to be extended to upper/middle management. In most companies 99% of the decisions are made by the level below the executive team. These are the collection of relatives, kiss-asses and a scattering of qualified individuals who hope to eventually make it to the C-suite.

  • This is has always been the glaring issue with pure democracies.

That’s why constitutional republics were created. It’s supposed to be a counter to the negative side of democracy. The constitution is supposed to be continuously updated and refined with the changing needs of the Republic.

FYI the last constitutional amendment to the U.S. was in 1992. That is 34 years ago. Unless something changes radically in the next few years, historians will refer to that date as when the U.S. Constitution died.

  • I spent way to many years traveling to France for business and spending several weeks there at a time. I don’t speak French of course as I studied a bit of Spanish. When there as a foreigner you generally get either pleasant and wonderful people or snobbish assholes.

Parisians lean more towards assholes though I met many wonderful people there. It’s more of a disdainful bored attitude without much bite. They know tourism is necessary for their jobs but dealing with tourism is a pain the ass. This interaction pretty much sums it up.

When you are outside of Paris the reactions get more extreme. I got some of the best and worst reactions when I was in smaller cities like Nantes or Lyon.
