Open Source@lemmy.ml•Closed‑source vs source‑available vs open‑source — which model makes the most sense for small tools?
2·1 day agoNobody is making money off CLI timers, regardless of who can use the source code.

Technology@lemmy.world•Google has a price for you. We found it.English
1·2 days agoBecause any webpage you load has total control of the content it serves, including the plaintext of your emails along with the keys you use to decrypt them.
e2e encryption in browser is effectively not e2e in any meaningful sense, this goes for any thing, but Proton are the worst for trying to convince you that they can’t do this.
Software that is targeting people who might need encryption should be honest about it’s own limitations.

92·2 days agoAlso their “e2e” is only in the browser, which is only e2e if they don’t get a warrant, at which point it’s trivial for them to get your browser to decrypt everything for them.
I wouldn’t mind Proton if:
- Their fans weren’t so annoying
- They didn’t market themselves as more secure than they are
Git was started by Linus but he doesn’t run GitHub

Technology@lemmy.world•DeepSeek-V4 arrives with near state-of-the-art intelligence at 1/6th the cost of Opus 4.7, GPT-5.5English
36·3 days agocompare that to the cost of running the DeepSeek model on comparable hardware (because it is open weight).
What?
You can’t compare the cost of running a model at home to the cost of running a model operationally as a business.
Or at least nobody should take that comparison seriously.
If OpenAI/Anthropic are selling at a loss
Why the If, we know they are running at huge losses.
Honestly this level of poster analysis is why clankers are able to impress people, everyone has just accepted full bullshit all of the time and nobody is willing to admit the unknowns are significant and the numbers we are being presented are largely unverified/unverifiable!

Technology@lemmy.world•Age checks could turn internet into an ID checkpoint and would kill anonymity, Proton CEO saysEnglish
14·3 days agoI’d be ok with age verification if it can be done in an anonyomous way
People lost their shit over a local API with an easily fake-able age bracket.
The problem with hyperventilating over everything, is that there is no benefit to even trying to write reasonable laws as they get painted dishonestly anyway.

28·3 days agoSure but comparing what companies in an industry full of losers make, is pretty meaningless as we don’t know how much companies are losing right now.

Linux@lemmy.ml•How to check pc for spyware and can you say there is no spyware or is it probability
5·4 days agoYou can never be sure there is no spyware because if your infected a sufficiently advanced spyware can hide itself.
In theory you can use a liveCD to scan your OS for specious signs but if someone has written bespoke spyware for you it may be hard to detect as it won’t match any of the signatures.

California@lemmy.world•California Billionaire Tax Has Signatures Needed for Ballot, Backers Say
43·4 days agoCalifornia’s Legislative Analyst’s Office found that the proposed wealth tax was likely to increase state tax revenue by tens of billions of dollars over several years. That analysis also found that the measure would decrease income tax revenue by hundreds of millions of dollars or more annually because some billionaires would leave the state.
It’s gambling a potential one-time revenue bump in exchange for massive ongoing losses, which would force cuts to schools and health care
God I fucking hate centerists, Trump’s tax cuts take effect now and will cripple healthcare for years (you can’t just rehire thousands of medical professionals), if fixing this means we need to increase taxes on billionaires by a different measure later that fine.
Also the Math
tens of billions of dollars over several years.
hundreds of millions of dollars or more annually
N x 10^10 > M x 10^8
100 N > M
The one time revenue is 100 times bigger, even if you tweak N & M, your looking at 30ish years before the total revenue is less.
Yeah it’s funny with AI they are deliberately obfuscating what they can actually do to scare

Insane people doing “lone wolf” attacks is a byproduct of the government’s continued support of a genocide not the protests against that genocide.
it is entirely unsurprising that an “independent” representative of the state, is more friendly to Far-right marches than to liberal/left ones though.
