You certainly don’t need to be an expert on everything to contribute to OSM. I don’t know half of the complicated stuff, but I regularly contribute when I can, mapping buildings, sidewalks, and updating place information in my area.

There is no expectation or commitment, so you can map as much or as little as you want. If you don’t know how to do something, you can always open an issue with details (i.e. “this shop changed its phone number to X”) and someone else can help you fix it
