  • Less “competitive” mindset I think. I feel like homophobia has resulted in a lot of men taking their pent up sexual aggression out on women when they might otherwise be able to identify themselves as bi and just work out those feelings with another dude. Instead we have all these men spiraling into emotional black holes because women don’t want them right this second. I’ve heard anecdotally that if everyone felt 100% comfortable being honest bi people would probably be the true majority. So it’s not like it would fix the incel problem but there might be few enough that they couldn’t concentrate into inescapable singularities.

  • Honestly from my experience with corporate healthcare the real problem is that every mission critical message is wrapped in ten layers of feelgood bullshit.

I worked at a place where when they introduced a text paging system with priority flags, the actual meanings and expectations of those priority flags was buried in 30 slides of “remember to be nice to your coworkers, ok kiddos?” then there was one SINGLE slide with, “a green fyi flag needs no answer but there is a read receipt, an orange urgent flag requires an answer within 30 minutes, and a red critical flag requires the resident to be on the unit within five minutes.”

When someone asked me three months after taking that course if any of the flags meant anything I had to figure out which module it even was in because the title (as stated) had NOTHING to do with this single piece of important information the 30 slide presentation contained. Then I had to scroll through to almost the end (not the actual end though because that would have made even a little sense) and take a cropped screenshot of the slide to print out and COLOR IN MYSELF WITH HIGHLIGHTERS to make a peice of relevant wall signage to keep by the secretary desk.

Technology is evolving like DNA. 99% of these proteins do nothing except you can’t actually take any of them out because they might do one thing sometimes maybe that will result in the baby not growing a foot or not being able to make insulin. So instead of clarifying things and cutting back we’re just adding more alarms, more forms to fill out, more presentations to watch and more documentation to read and now that we can’t keep up we’re not reducing complexity at all in fact now we’re making robots to help us get confused faster which means things can and “should” get more complicated which means we need more robots and-

I had a coworker ten years ago literally just stroke out at work. I get it, tbh.

  • That anyone actually deeply cares, or to put it more precisely that anyone can care about you more than you do. If you care about yourself less, it only lessens the amount anyone else can care about you.

If someone insists they care for you more than you can yourself, there is something deeply wrong with either their perception or their motives. They are using you to meet their own ends either directly or by feeling better about themselves. In both cases they will try to control you and you must escape them quickly.

Once you come to peace with that you either get a lot better or a lot worse very quickly and in either case at least the mental illness part will be over. I’m aware of it but I haven’t really come to peace yet. I’ll let you know how that goes. Maybe.

The wildest part to me was the international / immigrant nurse who was shocked that in the US we care enough about the mentally ill to bother putting them in prison. She was like “back home if they don’t have family that’s willing to take care of them we just physically throw and/or kick them out of the city and let them wander off and die.” Like I’m horrified by the US prison industrial complex but that was a whole new level of unhinged that I didn’t even know existed.

  • I mentioned it and hubs immediately went on an unhinged rant about something called rationalism, “a snowcrash style ocean flotilla cult,” and his trust fund friend who hates homeless people (in his defense he did get stabbed but I can also hear him in my head saying the kind of dumbass thing that would get him stabbed). I’m still lost so I’m just going to keep trying to finish Interesting Times by Terry Prachett which I got for $1 as a paperback at my library’s used book sale last fall.

  • Yes the etsy shops are why she wants one but I feel like I could make one that’s much more elegant. She does not have an apple watch or the means to purchase one. We also both share an interest in esoteric spiritual practices and a wooden implement would be more appropriate than plastic.

I felt like if I could just Frankenstein the visible part of a card chip into a much smaller balsa wood sandwich on the end of a wooden stick (plus decorations obvs) or into a pocket drilled into something like this for $20 and most of that being the card.

How does one get the antenna out too (a subsequent google search indicates that I would still need the surface area of a card which makes this less doable, which is why I asked in the first place, ty).

…although now I’m wondering how hard it would be to buy an RFID chip that’s more appropriately shaped or that has a loose antenna I can string up or down a wrapped handle and clone the gift card.

fun fact; drugs that act on your GABA nervous system (benzodiazepines such as xanax, also barbiturates and alcohol) are the only drugs that will kill you outright on withdrawal.

Stimulant withdrawal (amphetamines, cocaine, caffeine, nicotine) causes headache, confusion, fatigue, and occasionally suicidal ideation. Opiate withdrawal (oxycodone, heroin, fentanyl), causes anxiety and flu-like symptoms that can be fatal if severe enough (dehydration, GI complications) but, only in the same way that a flu can, and do not kill you outright. (THC / marijuana withdrawal is the chillest, usually only causing mild irritability and appetite loss, which the others do to a much greater extent).

Benzo (and other GABA active withdrawals) causes a rebound of your nervous system’s stress and fight or flight system that cascades from:

    1. extreme anxiety and most of the same flu-like symptoms as opiates then into
    2. vivid hallucinations (often of being covered in insects including tactile sensation) and paranoid delusions, then finally into
    3. back-to-back seizures that eventually result in nervous system failure, hypoxia, and death.

The old-school word for this is “the delirium tremens” or “DTs.”

If you are using these substances at a high enough and especially an unsustainable dose (which can cause respiratory depression / hypoxia and weakness of gait / traumatic head injury, similarly to an opiate overdose) you will need to be withdrawn in a either a specialized rehab with medical capabilities or if the addiction is severe enough a hospital or even specifically an intensive care unit. It’s possible that if you’re a binge drinker (drink large quantities but don’t drink at all some days) you may not need special withdrawal precautions. That said, addicts often minimize the extent of their addiction early in the recovery process so a lot of facilities that are unequipped to manage this type of withdrawal will refuse those patients outright until they’ve been medically evaluated. I’ve actually had a few patients were the ED was like “oh yeah he’s a lil jittery but not actively withdrawing” and a few hours into being on the unit they can barely bring a cup of water to their mouth without spilling it.

Obviously the history of legislative bans on alcohol is a great example of why criminalizing substance use is pretty much always a losing battle but it’s also WILD that alcohol is legal when specifically compared to marijuana being illegal.

    This has been a PSA.
