What does “stood down” mean? Fired/let go? Suspended? The article doesn’t make it clear.
My guess would be that he quit before they could fire him? I could see that approach, as a way of admitting that the person should not have the occupation.
ETA: as in “stepped down”
I 100% took a swing and missed. The wording doesn’t play it that way. I’m as confused as anyone.
I gather that it means “laid off” or “suspended (possibly without pay?)”.
Probably closer to the latter in this case.
