Former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene said she is worried that President Donald Trump will use the war in Iran to try to cancel the 2028 presidential election.
Presidential terms are limited, on Jan 20th 2029 Trump is no longer president. Regardless of any election having happened. If an election hasn’t happened, then the presidency goes down the line of succession to someone who is still in office. Without an election the House no longer exists as well, they all lose their seats at the same time, along with a third of the Senate.
That’s exactly what apparently too many people don’t seem to be able to get through their moronic heads.
Just because something is the law doesn’t mean it’s actually enforced. We’ve seen it so fucking many times with Trump. He breaks a law, a bunch of people yell “hey, you can’t do that!” and then look the other way, padding themselves on the back for standing up to Trump, who continues to break the law.
It’s like telling a toddler “if you steal another cookie, I’m going to be mildly annoyed”, and then hoping the toddler will stop stealing cookies.
Ah, is that defined in those same kinds of laws that have been ignored in the past years? I have some bad news then. If nobody enforces a law, the law is irrelevant.
Not only that, but he literally has no authority to do it. Elections are a STATE process, and he has no say in it. If a state decides to defy whatever method he uses to deny elections, there’s nothing he can do about it. What if every Blue state just had their elections anyway?
And this assumes that even Red states would go along with it. There are plenty of ambitious Republicans who can only move up if they can get elected, so they want elections, too. People are going to resign, retire, quit, die, go to jail, etc., and those offices need to be filled, and that takes elections.
Unless he tries to cancel JUST the Presidential election. That would take a special kind of stupid, but Trump never lets us down in that department.
Maybe in theory. But since Trump has control over everything, these rules could change, or nobody would enforce them. Russia, Hungary, etc. had similar legislation.
The legislation that limits his terms is also what lets him override governors control of the National Guard. If he decides it doesn’t matter, so will they.
All of politics ultimately boils down to whether you can muster a sufficiently powerful armed force to do your bidding, and no armed force in America will stand up to Trump at this rate.
He could try forcing the army to attack US cities, that probably wouldn’t work well for a number of reasons. On the other side, states have enough National Guard forces that would not listen to an illegitimate president over their own governors. If it comes to that, the US is already cooked, and all bets are off on who wins.
This is assuming that military command won’t follow his orders, Democratic governors won’t instantly capitulate and/or that the National Guard won’t follow Trump anyway. The assumption that the National Guard will automatically follow their state government in particular is very flimsy, since Trump appeals to conservatives across the country. Even in a blue state you’ll find lots of MAGAts, and there’s nothing preventing them from joining the national guard. Do you have a source the NG is particularly left-leaning?
National guard troops aren’t strongly political, they do however follow chain of command. It’s not that they’re maga or not, it’s that their command structure hasn’t been purged by the regime, and every governor has already reviewed their command since Trump started fucking with the states.

Well on paper yes, but who’s gonna enforce it? Saying it unfortunately doesn’t make it so

How cute of you to think that Republicans will follow the rules of law.
