    A ground invasion of Iran would entrench the regime, because even people who hate their local regime tend to put patriotism first and put their beef aside to fight the invader. WW2 was a real bonanza for Stalin for example: however terrible he was, the Russians were keener to kick German butts than kick his.

      He was more afraid of nations, that were forcefully included into USSR like Ukrainians. Some of them were ready to unite with German forces and attack USSR back together if only Nazi Germany would have treated them as allies and not as cheap labor force for Nazi regime. Especially because of the alliance agreements that Ukrainians had with Germany in times of WW1.

      Edited clarification: so what I simply mean, is that if Nazi Germany would have stated their actions as liberation from the Soviet oppression and not the conquering to indeed force the Nazi oppression, they could have accomplished more goals.
