    The great firewall blocks access to particular websites, not the Internet in general. If you go to Chinese social media sites from the western “side” of the great firewall you are interacting with everyone in China on that social media site, not just people using VPNs to access twitter or youtube.

      Sure, we can go there where everything is monitored and controlled, but they can’t come here… where they can speak freely.

        You can post on lemmy from mainland China, I’ve done it.

        The only instances that are blocked are Hexbear and .ml, and you can still use a VPN or HK-based esim to get around it.
