A day or two ago I accidentally stumbled upon PieFed and the Fediverse at large. How? I was looking for a way to read Reddit posts in a private browser while using a VPN (without having to sign in). I couldn’t find anything helpful, but I did start to get suggestions for alternatives to Reddit. Reading through those I saw talk of Lemmy which led me to start reading up on the ActivityPub protocol, and on and on from there.

The whole multi-connected aspect of the Fediverse feels a lot closer (to me) to the world wide web of the future that was sold to us during the 90’s/early 00’s than the mega walled gardens that we ended up with. So, I deleted my Reddit account and signed up here. That might seem rash, but I was already pretty tired of Reddit.

Anyway, that’s all I can think of for an introduction. I look forward to getting to know you, and hope you have a great day!

-PS: To celebrate the reminder of the late 90’s/early 00’s I’m listening to some “Old” Nu Metal (P.O.D., Korn, System of a Down, Puddle of Mudd). What, if anything, are y’all listening to?

    Welcome!

There’s absolutely something retrofuturistic about this place - it’s mirroring the vision of the future we might have had rather than the crap future we ended up getting. If you asked me about the future of the internet back in 2005 it’s very likely I would have dreamed up that all my PhPBB forums would somehow communicate with each other.

I had to look up PhPBB, and oh my goodness did it bring back a flood of memories. I had no idea all the old forums I used were all running the same software! Now I’m going to have to see if I can find a list of forums still active and see if I remember any.

Thanks for the welcome, and the suggestion! You’re right, they are a great band. I listened to their album Get Color last night. I particularly like We are Water.

Welcome! It’s not as populated here, but it’s pretty nice. I hope you enjoy your time here on Lemmy.

As for music, I’m late to the party but I’ve just discovered angine de poitrine. Based on the bands you’ve listed you might like them. Super weird micro-tonal rock band

Great band suggestion! This is the first I’ve heard of them (I’m never up to date on bands).

I’m listening to volume 1 of their self titled album now. So far it’s pretty sick.

Welcome! Since you mentioned old nu metal, allow me to recommend a modern band that reminded me of Korn’s first album.

    Tallah - Primeval Obsession

I especially like track 2 (“What we know,” which reminds me of early Korn) and track 5 (my primeval obsession).

If you want more 90’s nu metal, I still find Cold (13 Ways to Bleed on Stage and Year of the Spider) fun to listen to, as well as the Staind album Dysfunction. I’ve also always felt like no one talks about Sevendust’s first album, which is amazing.

I completely forgot about Staind! Oh man, I’m going to have to look up Dysfunction and Break the Cycle.

As for Tallah: thank you very much for the recommend! Their Bandcamp page is awesome. I’ll definitely be buying all their albums.
