I wrote a short story over a decade ago about how a Galactic Consortium has been monitoring Earth for possible inclusion. The alien ambassador gets on all screans and devices, simulcasting to the entire world that they monitor and evaluate potential planets to see if they’re fit to join, a process usually taking over 10 years. They deemed us unworthy in less than half the time because there were 12 people on the planet with the wealth and resources to end starvation and suffering for the entire population, yet they’d rather burn & destroy 1/3 of the planet to accumulate more wealth instead…and it goes on like that for a bit. But he said that they’ll quarantine the planet, and if we attempt to break that quarantine they’ll destroy us. Then goes on to mention they have only encountered 1 race like us in their thousand years of existence…and that race attempted to build weapons to conquer them, but ended up destroying themselves in the process because of their petty tribal feuds.
Imagine figuring out how to travel faster than light and then crashing into the biggest shithole in the galaxy.
