Today’s game is Mario Kart Double Dash. I had a long day and just wanted to play something. Usually my go to is 64 or 8 Deluxe. It’s what i know, and in 8’s Case it lets me spend time with friends. I decided though to try double dash. I’ve never really cared for it and wanted to give it an honest try outside of the grand prix.

I selected 4 of the courses that stood out to me on the list and tried them. Namely i like the snow one (Frappe Snowland). I love snow levels and this is no exception. I tried this one a few times actually, but that brings me to my complaint. All the courses felt not only too short, but also Arcadey. I’m not sure what it is but Double Dash to me feels kind of like a parody that’s trying to also be an Arcade Game.

Maybe it’s because i have no fondness for the gamecube era, maybe it’s me being unfair, i don’t know what it is. But the game just feels off to me.
Also the controls feel a little weird too. Almost stiff i’d say, though this may just be the cart i picked.

Overall i have no hate for this game, but i do find myself wishing i had played 64 instead. Maybe it’s on me for trying it though when i was so drained from today (spent 9 hours driving today. Also an explanation of why today (i imagine) feels so weirdly worded), so i might try some more again when i’m more well rested.

Double Dash is great. It’s the first Mario Kart that got the drifting right imo. SNES and MK64’s controls feel really dated to me, but Double Dash still holds up.
Not a huge fan of the special character specific items, but being able to hold two items (and switch between them) is a really great mechanic.
I like that they kept the holding two items between other games. That’s definitely something I appreciate because it gives me a little bit more offensive and defensive breathing room
I might be misremembering, but I think in Double Dash you can even hold three items if you trail one of them.
Edit: I tested it. You can’t. You can’t drag items at all in Double Dash.
